Abstract: Einstein's quantum mechanical photoelectric theory has a natural multi-photon analog, but it also has a classical analog that is both counter-intuitive and surprisingly successful. We will describe the classical trajectories and show their consequences in matching experimental data on double and triple ionization [1] of noble gas atoms under short intense laser irradiation. An extension to elliptically polarized pulses is providing new predictions for experimental test [2].
