  Abstract

This presentation gives an overview of Sandia’s Large Optics Coating Operation, which provides high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) optical coatings for large optics of the Z-Backlighter TW and PW lasers.  It starts with a brief description of the Z-Backlighter Laser Facility and the Optical Support Facility and large optics coater, and then summarizes coating operational performance and LIDTs of coated optics over the past 9 years.  Highlights and results of coating research at Sandia follow, emphasizing the correlation between LIDTs and P polarization (Ppol) intensity jumps at layer boundaries of anti-reflection (AR) coatings designed for non-normal angle of incidence (AOI), process control in ion-assisted deposition to achieve smoother high reflection (HR) coatings, and substrate polishing and cleaning protocols for enhanced AR coating LIDTs.   Specific large optics coating challenges include bandwidth and spectral drift behaviors of dual wavelength HR coatings of a fold mirror and a steering mirror,  and the multi-layer dielectric (MLD) coatings for Sandia’s large scale (94cm X 42cm) gratings.  The final part of the presentation deals with recent work in the development of coating processes for deposition of high index layers of TiO2, and in the design and development of coatings based on these high index layers for broad bandwidth HR (BBHR) of femto-second (fs) class PW laser pulses.  The Sandia BBHR coating design provides a 200 nm HR bandwidth centered at 900 nm for fs pulses at 45o AOI, Ppol.  The group delay dispersion (GDD) over the operational HR bandwidth has smooth behavior and is reasonably constant, and the electric field behaviors favor high LIDTs over the group of optical frequencies comprising the fs pulse.  Reflectivity and GDD results of the first coating run for this BBHR coating design are promising.

  Biographical Sketch of John Bellum

John Bellum received a BS (Georgia Institute of Technology, 1968) and a PhD (University of Florida, 1976), both in physics.  He has over 30 scientific publications and extensive experience as a physicist and optical engineer.  He provides technical leadership and oversight for the Large Optics Coating Operation at Sandia National Laboratories, specializing in high laser damage threshold optical coatings for large, meter-size optics for petawatt class lasers.  He is a senior member of both SPIE and OSA.
