Structured Optical Fibers: Concepts and Applications

The advent of fiber optics has led to the most rapid changes in communications technology. Nowadays research on optical fibers has extended into diverse technological fields ranging from spectroscopic measurements to sensing applications, from laser sources to biomedical imaging, however they still face many obstacles to improving system performance. The progress in ultrafast laser technology over the last decades has opened up new avenues for bulk micromachining applications. Although conventional laser ablation, photolithography, abrasive machining, electrical discharge machining and chemical mechanical machining have been widely used in fiber post-processing, none of them could reach a high level of the precision and versatility of femtosecond laser micromachining.

In this seminar, I will present a femtosecond laser aided hybrid machining technique by taking advantage of those features in different techniques. I will discuss recent progress on sensing and lasing applications enabled by the breakthrough structured optical fibers.
