  The structure, properties and applications of specialty glasses will be described. The development of borate glasses that rapidly convert to hydroxyapatite when exposed to physiological environments will be described, with an emphasis on the way borate glasses dissolve in aqueous solutions. For these studies, micro-Raman spectroscopy is used to characterize reaction kinetics. The structures of Nb-phosphate glasses developed for high index optical applications will be described, along with a study of the oxidation kinetics of Nb(4+) ions that form when the glass is prepared under reducing conditions. Zn-phosphate glasses that densify when exposed to f-sec lasers will be discussed, including the effects of alumina on glass chemical durability. Finally, the development of specialty borosilicate glasses for solid oxide fuel cell seals will be described, including the effects of interfacial reactions on glass stability. 

    报告人简介

Richard K. Brow is Curators' Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Missouri S&T. He has nearly 200 publications on the structure, properties and applications of oxide glasses and glass-ceramics, and holds twelve US patents. He is the immediate past-president of the American Ceramic Society.
